Pack for the whole island day: the ride to the jetty, boarding the boat, time outside and the journey back. A small, thoughtfully packed bag is easier to enjoy than a large one filled with things the trip may not need.

1. Start with the route

Ask whether the day includes swimming, a viewpoint walk, several boat stops or time ashore. Check storage arrangements and whether your bag stays with you during activities.

Pack around that answer. Something useful for a beach afternoon may not be enough for a walking stop or a transfer with limited luggage room.

2. Keep the essentials easy to reach

Save the confirmation, coordinator’s contact and meeting instructions offline. Keep the items you need at the jetty together, rather than at the bottom of the bag.

  • Charged phone and a protected power bank.
  • Water-resistant storage for items that must stay dry.
  • Drinking water if not provided, plus a refillable bottle.
  • Sun protection and clothing suited to the activities.
  • A towel, change of clothes and a separate bag for wet items.
  • Footwear suitable for every planned stop.

3. Check before bringing bulky equipment

Ask what the operator supplies, what sizes are available and whether personal equipment can be brought. Confirm luggage limits for both the vehicle and the boat.

If a walk is included, check its current requirements. Sabah Tourism Board specifies covered footwear for Bohey Dulang; confirm current access and the operator’s instructions before leaving.

4. Make the return comfortable

Keep dry clothes and return-transfer details easy to find. Separate wet items before getting back into a vehicle and check that you have everything when changing between the boat, jetty and car.

The Tawau transfer checklist is useful when the island day is part of a longer arrival or departure journey.

5. Leave the stop as you found it

Bring your small waste back, follow the operator’s instructions and avoid taking anything from the places you visit. Choose reusable items where practical, without overpacking.

Once the bag is ready, return to the Semporna planning guide or the Langkawi itinerary to check how the day fits the whole trip.
